Anita Smith (Santiago)
Anita Marie Smith was born on July 10, 1926 to the late Louis and Elma Santiago in New York, New York. Both her parents were immigrants from Cape Verde and Barbados respectively. She departed this life on June 11,2018 at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY.
Anita was a resident of Bronx, NY for the majority of her ninety- one years. Although her education did not exceed past the eighth grade it did not diminish her passion and enthusiasm for education; a trait she imparted to her children.
She was united in marriage with the late John Smith in January 11, 1946, whom she affectionately called ‘my John’, and to this union ten children were born.
Anita was not only a homemaker, she was also the precursor to in-home childcare. She wasn’t just a child-care provider to the children in her community. She was an advocate for their education. Our mother, always encouraged them, “to reach for the moon and if you fall may you land among the stars".
Anita was a faithful and active member of Saint Philip’s and James Catholic Church, where she was on the choir and taught Sunday school.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Johnny Malachi (Deceased); son,Gregory Smith(Maryland); daughter-in-law, Debbie Smith (Maryland);daughter, Ernestine Smith (Bronx, New York); daughter, Mary Jane Smith (Bronx, New York); son, Rodger Smith (Mount Vernon, New York); daughter, Nora Smith (New York, New York); daughter, Sandra Gaillard (Bronx, New York); son-in-law,Tyrone Gaillard (Bronx, New York); daughter,Danita Johnson (Bronx, New York); son,Derwin ‘Champ’ Smith,(Bronx, New York);daughter-in-law,Margo Smith(Bronx, New York); daughter,Danielle Kennedy (Riverhead,New York); a sister, Marjorie Kinsey(Bronx, New York); twenty-three grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
